Route through the Mussel Beds and Fishing Gear of the Ria de Vigo
With this Ria de Vigo mussel and fishing gear route, we’ll show you the whole process of farming this shellfish, from hatchlings until they can be marketed. And all at the foot of the mussel platform, or batea as it’s called in Galicia. The Ria de Vigo is bustling with activity and in terms of fishing, even more. Therefore, on board this old mussel boat you can learn about the different fishing gear used today in inshore fishing. The type of gear you’ll see depends on the time of the year – for example, trammel nets used to catch cuttlefish, or pots for octopus and crabs. Or you’ll also see small boats, called gliders, from which the clams and razor clams are extracted, in this case by diving.
From the sea you will realise how important this marvellous environment is to the town of Vigo. An onboard guide will tell you in great detail about everything happening in the ria.
