SNORKELLING AND CAMINO DE SANTIAGO BY KAYAK
ITINERARY:
DAY 1. SANXENXO – AROUSA ISLAND
On the first day we’ll stay at the Hotel Carlos I Silgar 4*, located on Rúa Vigo, in the heart of Sanxenxo, less than a minute away from Silgar beach, one of the best-known beaches of the Rías Galegas. Sanxenxo, tourism capital of the Rías Baixas, is a unique enclave that is a combination of cultural and scenic wealth, as well as various options for leisure and free-time activities, both aquatic and inland.
The plan for this day is our Camino de Santiago by Kayak activity.
There are many variants to date of the Camino de Santiago but few or none are as original as the one we suggest – an unforgettable two-stage trip by kayak along the Ria de Arousa and the river Ulla from Vilanova de Arousa to Pontecesures following the Traslatio (the journey followed by the remains of Saint James the Apostle, from Jerusalem to Galicia) and going up the Ria de Arousa in a fun and active way.
On the kayak journey you’ll enjoy unique scenery, idyllic beaches, islands that seem to float in the middle of the sea, and even a riverine Vía Crucis, one of a kind in the world marking the journey taken by the body of the Apostle, according to legend, in a stone boat to Iria Flavia, spot where the Spiritual Variant re-joins the Portuguese Route.
On the kayak trip you’ll discover how people live in the coastal towns along the route, their famous mussel platforms (bateas), where the highly prized mussel is fattened, visit special places such as Cortegada island in the Atlantic Islands of Galicia National Park, sail through the famous clam farming parks in Carril, relax in the crystalline waters and fine sand on the beach at Bamio, travel back in time past the Viking towers of Catoira and relax among reeds and small islets during the crossing until you get to Pontecesures.
This activity lasts approximately eight hours.
Dinner at Snack Bar and accommodation at Hotel Carlos I Silgar 4*.
DAY 2. SANXENXO – AROUSA ISLAND
On the second day we’ll go snorkelling, because if there’s one thing that characterises the coast of Arousa, it’s the richness and abundance of life in its waters. You can encounter anything from starfish to velvet crabs. The perfect stage to dive and enjoy snorkelling on Arousa island.
The waters of the coastline are shallow and in optimal tidal conditions, making it an accessible and easy activity to do. Please note that snorkelling involves holding your breath and wearing snorkel masks. It can, therefore, be practised with no prior knowledge. Because if you are hesitating between snorkelling and scuba diving, snorkelling is the best choice for the inexperienced. Mainly because this is a very simple activity to do.
It’s a good way to engage with the environment and get you started with water activities.
